Through its seminar farm "Gut Hohenberg", SÖL offers experiences and training within the agricultural sector for people of all ages. During school visits spanning several days, children learn how food is produced by helping on the farm. The main activities for children are milking and processing the milk, working in the fields, the vegetable garden and with the animals, preparing food from the garden and the fields as well as making bread and cakes from corn. Working in a group, the children learn to appreciate the value and quality of these products by seeing how much time and work gets put in. For adults, the seminar farm offers a wide range of courses and seminars within the agricultural field, such as lectures and seminars on bread baking, agriculture and horticulture, cooking, wine tasting etc. "Gut Hohenberg" ist located in the southern part of Palatinate (Biosphere Reserve Forest of Palatinate).
The farm with its 30 hectares of land (arable, pasture, orchard meadow and forest) provides the basis for environmental education involving practical experience and for environmental research and experimentation. Regional organic plant and animal products are produced and processed: cereals, potatoes, butter, cottage cheese, eggs and meat. To the farm belong cattles, horses, goats, pigs, chickens, bees and cats.
Courses and seminars offer opportunities for experience and education regarding all aspects of sustainable landuse. Seminars for experts take place as well as events for lay people, children and students. The farm already engages in cooperations with a forest kindergarden an with an association promoting school farms in Palatinate (Förderverein Schulbauernhof Pfalz).
The seminar farm has established cooperations with the Universities at Landau, Mainz, Trier and Heidelberg, the University of applied sciences at Bingen, and state-run training and experimental institutions. Practical research projects in the areas of environmental education, vegetation and cultural ecology as well as on the topic of soil conservation are being set up. Coopperation with the relevant ministries of agriculture, the environment and education, secondary institutions and with environmental and organic agriculture associations is envisaged.
